There are many honors that a President of the United States gets to be a part of, but I have to believe that even for the leader of the free world, it must be a thrill to have the opportunity to honor the father of our country from George Washington's home in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

Such was the case for President Bush this past Monday, February 19th 2007, as he was able to honor the country's first president on the occasion of his 275th birthday while standing in front of his home, with the Potomac river, mostly frozen this time of year as a backdrop. This was President Bush's first visit as president to Mount Vernon, and 2007 seemed the appropriate time to make this visit given the content of his speech.

It was the content of his speech that caught my attention, and once again served to remind how proud I am to be reminded of the efforts President Bush is making to make the world a safer place for everyone, despite the seemingly never ending criticisms he receives

Bush drew parallels to the struggles that Washington faced as he helped to give birth to this nation and its freedoms that sometimes we take for granted, to the what he described as "a new war on global terrorism." My first thought was that when Washington was faced with his enormous challenge, with all aspects being relative, he must have felt hopelessly overwhelmed by what he was facing. Washington never "blinked", and to date neither has Bush, which goes to prove that Washington led by example and through strength of character, whereas although Bush possesses these same qualities, must rise above the intense scrutiny that today's media tools has at its disposal that offer us a look at moment by moment updates in the war on terror.

Takeaways
  • President Bush visits George Washington's home for first time as president
  • His Presidents Day speech draws parallels to Washington's struggle to help birth a nation
  • To today's global war on terror

I was discouraged to see President Bush at Mount Vernon. Especially when he tried to make snide comparisons between himself and a real President. It was a disgraceful photo op.
