Pizza Box Football is a throwback to some of the older versions of sports simulations. These days with computers, you don't see to many of this type of game being published. Instead of controlling all the action on the screen Pizza Box Football is a game that is strategy based. The first thing you w
ill notice when you open the box is a bunch of charts and tables. Don't feel overwhelmed by this discovery, the charts are very easy to use. There are also dice which will be rolled to determine the result of each play.

To play the game the defensive player decides first if they will defend the run, a short pass, or a long pass. Once they make this decision, the defensive player chooses the color die that matches their decision and a white die and puts these in their closed fist to keep it hidden from the offensive player. The offensive player will then declare if they are calling a run, short pass, or long passing play. At that point the defensive player reveals their dice and rolls. Both players look up on the chart the "defensive adjustment" for the offensive player's roll of the dice. Next, the offensive player rolls three black six-sided dice and calculates the total with an adjustment for the "defensive adjustment". This roll on the chart will tell the offensive player what happens on the play and what dice to roll next to determine the final result of the play (if necessary).

The game is played with this general mechanism just like your regular football game is played. Players have four downs to move the ball ten yards before earning a first down, there are fumbles, interceptions, punts, field goals, safeties, sacks, etc. in the game as well. The game also has a mechanism for timing the game based on the number of plays. There are even allowances for time outs. The game has a league option as well if you have a bunch of friends that want to play out an entire season of Pizza Box Football!

  • One of the better football simulations out there that I've seen recently.
  • The box is very large and therefore makes this game a little less portable than others I have seen.
  • The play calls are sort of simple, but the website offers suggestions for making it more advanced.
