Rabies has always meant something scary to me. I have heard the stories of humans receiving rabies and what a horrific and tragic thing it can be. Rabies starts in animals and humans receive the virus when bitten by one that is infected. Rabies has been around for about 4000 years and still no 100%
cure has been found. Rabies is deadly in humans in almost every case where the victim does not seek treatment. Rabies can be completely prevented if we take the proper actions. Seeking care immediately is important. Rabies is very rare in the United States with fewer than 30 cases reported since 1990. Places like Asia and Africa have many human rabies cases due to there diverse animal kingdoms. The US has taken several measures to control the disease that have been quite successful. Rapid animal attacks occur on a regular basis so many people get treated for rabies just in case one of these animals is infected. Raccoons are the most common animal that carry rabies in the Unites states. Skunks, foxes, bats, and coyotes are some of the other animals that may have rabies. Cats and dogs are the most common domestic reason for cases of human rabies because we have the most physical contact with our pets. Our dogs and cats receive rabies form bats, raccoons and animals already mentioned and simply pass the disease to us. Fish, reptiles, and birds have not ever been known to carry the virus.
