With candles being such a hot commodity, many are looking to create a home based candle business to supplement or replace their income. If this describes you, take the time to learn how to start a candle business that will be successful.

First, you must develop your business plan. A business plan is vital to creating a successful home business. Take the time to answer the following questions. Are you going to make your own candles, buy wholesale and sell resale, or be a representative of another company? How much start up capital do you possess? How much time are you willing to invest in your business? Are you going to sell directly to stores, at craft fairs, hold candle parties, or market online?

Once you have your business plan, take the time to acquire any knowledge that you need. Discover any business regulations you have to follow and file paperwork if necessary. Create your business name and make your business cards.

Start small. Don't feel that you need to have one hundred scents to choose from day one. Having so many choices will overwhelm your customer and take up too much of your storage space. Stick with some of the most popular candle scents such as vanilla with a mix of more unique scents. Be sure to give each scent a memorable name.

No matter how you are running your candle business, be sure to network. Focus not on selling your candles, but on creating relationships. People are more likely to buy from you if they know, trust, and like you. Join the Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations. If you are marketing online, do not simply put up your website and forget about it. Exchange links, post in forums, and create a mailing list so you can connect more often to potential customers.
