Today, February 20, 2007 is the deadline for Kansas City Police Chief James Corwin's deadline to take action in the case of two officers who had ignored a pregnant woman's pleas for medical attention.
Deadline Today for Police Chief's Recommendations in Miscarriage Case
The deadline was issued by the city's police board during a departmental investigation of the incident in February 2006.

The officers had stopped Sofia Salva, 32, for a fake temporary car tag last year. The police videotape shows Sofia Salva, asking for medical help from the officers. The officers ignored her plea for help and took her to jail after finding out that she had outstanding warrants. The next morning Salva, had a miscarriage.

The outstanding warrants that the officers arrested her for were those of endangering children, trespassing, driving while suspended and other traffic violations. The endangering children allegation came from a 2002 incident in which Sofia Salva, was accused of leaving her three children home alone while she went to the store.

The videotape was released earlier this month and was shown on local and national television and also on news Web sites. During the video of the police stop, Sofia Salva tells the police that she is three months pregnant, bleeding and needing to go to the hospital.

Sofia Salva, did say that jailers allowed her medical attention the morning after she had been stopped. At three months pregnant she claims to have delivered a premature baby boy who died a minute after birth.

Feb 1, 2007 the two officers Melody Spencer and Kevin Schnell were suspended with pay as the investigation continued into their actions. According to the police spokesman Capt. Rich Lockhart, the suspension of the officers is indefinite.

Sofia Salva has brought a lawsuit against both officers and the department for wrongful death and personal injuries. The lawsuit was filed in Jackson County Circuit Court, seeking actual damages exceeding $25,000 and punitive damages to punish and deter such conduct in the future.

One more thing, I think they should have listened to her cry for help, but I think the officers that she was lying to get out of her warrants.

I don't think she was a criminal. I think she probably came from a lifestyle of fraud, forgery and a corrupted government, where she was use to putting fake tags, etc. or whatever. In addition, her lack of education and ability to reason on top contributed to lies and suspicions on behalf of police that she may have been someone who is worse than she is.

Don't get me wrong I totally agree with the fact that those officers abused their power and cost an innocent baby it's life. They should be punished for that. I just have a problem with someone lying to gain sympathy when they already deserve sympathy to begin with.

I have not seen the video, but I would think that the officers should first and foremost have made sure she received medical treatment.

First and foremost she should have been taken to the hospital. They could have easily arrested her afterwards. I've always been told sex cannot be determined that young, but I miscarried at 12 weeks, and they told me the sex of the baby - unless they were off on how far along I was. Thanks for writing this article

While I agree that what they did was horrible there are also holes in her story. The holes surround the events of her miscarriage. First off she was three months pregnant, there for she could not have delivered a baby that could live for even a minute much less at that point know the sex of the baby. At three months the external sex organs are not fully developed. So part of her is trying to play a sympathy role with lies. She should receive sympathy for losing her baby , she does not need to lie to gain that sympathy.

I hope these officers receive punishment for their actions. They should never be able to serve as a peace officer again. Thanks for sharing this sad story.
