When my daughter was 2 years old I decided to teach her shapes and colors. She has never been in Daycare or pre-school so all of her education is up to me. When I came up with and implemented my plan, it worked like a charm and she knew all the shapes and colors within one week.

Here is what you will need:

For Painting activity:
Finger paints in a variety of colors
White Paper

For Crafts:
Large White Poster Board
Colored construction paper
Colored markers or crayons
Scissors
Glue or glue stick

For "Play-do" activity:
"Play-do" in a variety of colors
Cookie cutters in a variety of shapes (we found a box of cookie cutters at "Bed Bath & Beyond")
A "Play-Do" table or some surface that can be cleaned up easily

Here is what you do:

  • You could take the cue from your toddler and chose the color that matches the shirt they picked out
  • Repeat all steps until the child becomes bored or you need to stop.
  • your child has a fantastic collage of shapes and colors to hang on their bedroom wall

It takes a brave mom to pull out fingerpaints for the two year old! I love your article and I agree themeing the day with the same shape or color all day does really make it a natural learning process for the child. Thanks!

April, I teach three/four year olds all day. These are great suggestions, and I'll be trying some of them out.

You are essentially doing preschool without the other kids!

Very clear and well written. The steps are easy to follow, and giving a list of what is needed is very useful. When my baby is old enough, I will use this lesson!
