Experiencing Oahu, Hawaii on a Budget

Traveling to Hawaii may seem inconceivable to those who are pinching pennies right now, but some of the best things to do in Hawaii are free or cost very little. Here are a few tips from a past Oahu resident that may make your dreams of experiencing Hawaii much easier to realize.

Enjoy the North Shore Beaches

If you haven't made it past Waikiki, you haven't experienced Hawaii. While Honolulu is a fun experience, the best beaches really are on the other side of the island. Sunset and Waimea Bay are some of the most beautiful spots on the North Shore of Oahu, and definitely places beach lovers shouldn't miss.

Matsumoto Shave Ice

Shaved ice is a refreshing and delicious Hawaiian treat. My favorite place to get shaved ice on Oahu is located in a North Shore surf town called Haliewa. Matsumoto's is popular with tourists and locals alike, and has been open since the 1950s for a reason. With tons of flavors and an azuki bean/ice cream surprise at the bottom, this inexpensive treat is one you shouldn't miss out on. Stop at Matsumoto's, and then stroll the surf shops in Haliewa for a break from the beach.

Rent a long board in Waikiki

If you don't have the time or money to spend on all day surfing lessons, or just don't want to try and tackle the waves on the North Shore, rent a long board and play in the tame waves of Waikiki. The long boards rented to tourists are seriously akin to small boats and are relatively easy to get up on.

The Night Show at the Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is run by native island students at BYU Hawaii and is a good place to get a taste of authentic Polynesian Culture. There's an informative and entertaining day show that will give you a taste of all the Polynesian Islands. You may also attend a luau for a price, and the food is great. However, if you want to get the best bang for your buck, spend the day enjoying North Shore beaches, and then stop at the PCC for the night show.
