There are all types of collars and harnesses available for dogs nowadays. There are spiked collars, crystal studded collars, tough leather collars and sturdy nylon harnesses. Some collars and harnesses are obviously just for show with no functionality whatsoever, but some are both showy and functional. You want to choose a collar or harness that suits your dog's needs, fits correctly and shows off both your style and his. You do not want your dog's collar or harness rubbing or chafing his skin and you certainly do not want him to have a collar or harness that is too tight or too loose.

Collars

Collars come in many shapes and styles. Leather and nylon are two of the more popular collar materials, but collars can also be made of a special rope and other substances. You can get collars that are embellished with beads, crystals, studs, spikes and even diamonds if you are feeling ritzy. Collars come in sizes based on the dog's neck size. They sometimes vary depending on manufacturer, but it is a good idea to have your pet with you when you buy a collar so that you can try it on him. To find what size collar your dog needs, measure around your dog's neck and add two inches.

Harnesses

A harness is an effective way to teach your dog to refrain from tugging or pulling on the leash. The harness fits around the dog's shoulder and chest, giving the handler more control over the dog, but because it does not go around his throat there is no threat of choking. There are harnesses available for small dogs, but typically the larger breeds are the ones who really need to use a harness due to control issues. You generally measure the neck to determine the harness size that is right for your dog, but the best thing you can do is let your dog try on the harness before you buy it. Harnesses come in a variety of materials, including leather and nylon, but most people select nylon for its durability and comfort. However, if a harness is fitted correctly, there should be no comfort issues.
