With the rise in gas prices, E-coli scares, and food recalls, the price of groceries has spiked severely over the past year. Many shoppers have felt the pinch of increased food bills and struggled with the additional costs.

While some costs are unavoidable, there are a few simple, common sense steps you can take to help cut cost for your next trip to the grocery store.

#1- Never Go Grocery Shopping While You're Hungry
While everyone is familiar with this grocery shopping rule of thumb, it is a good one to take into account when it comes to saving money on your grocery bill. Hunger often encourages us to throw "munchies" into our carts. While these munchies may seem like a tasty treat to a hungry appetite, they are, in reality, just a waste of money. Munchie-type foods are also generally very high priced for a bunch of empty calories. Be sure to eat a satisfying snack or light meal before heading to the grocery store.

#2- Make A List and Stick To It
Before you leave for the grocery store, go through your cabinets and refrigerator carefully, making a list of only the items you absolutely need. While this may take a few more minutes of your time, it's incredibly valuable. Often times when you get to the store, it's hard to remember if you have enough eggs or bread for the week, and often times will buy an item you already have without knowing it.

After you create your list, make sure you remember to bring it with you, and check it several times throughout the store. Compare what's in your cart to what's on your list before you get to the check out counter. If it's not on the list, put it back!

#3- Reconsider "Great Deals"
It's easy to snap up a great sale without thinking about it. But, while 5 boxes of brownie mix for $5 may be a great deal, you have to ask yourself if you were even planning on buying brownie mix in the first place. If the sale item is something that's not on your list, then pass it by. A few dollars here and there add up quickly.
