When I create a treasure hunt I start by getting the treasure ready. Some times my treasure is small like some candy. I like to use the chocolate coins the best since they really do look like a treasure. Then I find a container to put the treasure in. Some times I have found small cardboard treasure boxes at a store. Or I use a food storage container. Any kind of container will work but if you plan on burying the treasure, like I do at times, then you might want to have a container that will be able to handle the wetness and the weight of the soil on the top of the container.
Depending on the child's age will depend on how hard a treasure hunt you make. For small children I draw pictures that will take them from one place to another until they find the treasure. For older children I write a word that will tell them where they should go. I usually give at least five places for them to go before they find the treasure. I may give a clue that will take them to the bath tub. When they look in the bathtub I will have a clue to take them to the kitchen sink and so on until the last clue being where the treasure is. I put the clues out in there spots ahead of time so I can enjoy watching the treasure hunt.
If the weather is nice it can be done outside. If you have a treasure hunt outside you can have the kids look into the sand box, swing set or on a bike. And if you are real inspired you can bury the treasure and put an X on the top telling them exactly where to dig up the treasure.
