"Running With Scissors" is supposedly based on the personal memoirs of Augustan Burroughs. If there is any truth to that, then there is no doubt that truth is stranger than fiction because this film is bazaar with a huge B.

Augustan (played by Joseph Cross) seems doomed almost from the beginning of his life, with a self-absorbed, egocentric, narcissistic mother who is obviously bipolar and a soulless father (played by Alec Baldwin) who seems stuck in a permanent depression. In the beginning, Augustan adores his mother Deidre (played by Annette Bening). He believes her brilliant poetry is just being overlooked by a jealous and callous world. However, slowly but surely, he begins to realize that something is seriously wrong, not with his mother's work but with his mother herself.

Eventually, the family begins meeting with a very eccentric therapist named Dr. Finch (played by Brian Cox). The psychiatrist's advice ends up being anything but professional. He prescribes prescription after prescription for Deidre in an attempt to control her. He manipulates and he controls. He literally does everything that he can do to undermine the family unit, eventually managing to break up the family altogether. Agustan's father leaves and doesn't look back.

At Finch's suggestion, Deidre leaves her son in the care of Finch's overtly strange family which includes wife Agnes (played by Jill Clayburgh), and two daughters. One daughter, Natalie (played by Evan Rachel Wood) is a kindred spirit to Augustan. The other, played by Gwyneth Paltrow is a tightly wound example of what most liberals believe Christians to be, which is insulting to say the least.

Augustan struggles to find himself while surrounded by a series of tormented souls all of who are just as lost as he. Acting out, he skips school and institutes a sexual relationship with a man 20 years his senior (played by Joseph Fiennes). He even breaks down and tries to contact his father Norman in hopes of finding someone who will give him the support and guidance that he so desperately wants and needs. Nothing works so he just gives in.

Obviously most people have led a loving and caring yet sheltered life, which is exactly what Augustan was looking for. I have seen first hand the crippled and tortured lives of someone near and dear to me and the mental anquish suffered by people like this cannot ever be fathomed by someone who has never seen it. I saw the movie and absolutely loved it. How this kid survived is a miracle in itself and when I saw it was based on reality I was crushed; however, that Augustan actually lived and breathed and survived should be a lesson for us all in futility. Suicide is usually an easy out for someone with this type of problem and I praise Augustan for defeating his depressive upbringing and uncaring parents to create a niche for himself is quite impressive. I haven't read the book yet but I plan to and it should be recommended in schools across the country instead of crap like catcher in the rye. Good luck and heart felt sympathies to Augustan and his future, I hope it's bright.

God review. I read the book and it, like others by Augusten Burroughs, was great. I'm still debating on whether to see the movie...I'm usually disappointed by movies based on books. I know there are people I wouldn't recommend the book to; it's one of those that will either make you laugh till you cry or leave you horrified and disappointed. Sounds like the movie is the same way.

I rented this movie cause I loved the title, but it was soooo relentlessly depressing that I just gave up and shut it off about 1/2 way through, something I rarely do. Personally, I don't doubt that people this bizarre exist, but the movie needed SOME kind of redeeming humor or hope. You did a fine job with the review, congrats on having your article featured.

This movie really stunk. And perhaps the most irritating things about it was its absloute insistence on attempting to be bizarre. That is always on ingredient for failure. Bizarre just is, it doesn't have to try. The trying translates into pretentiousness. I equate this movie with those stupid Expedia "Travelling Gnome" commercials. That scene in which all the characters peer into the toilet examining the feces is not bizarre, but stupid, bordering on a Cry For Help.

I read the book and thought it was absolutely amazing. I didn't think the movie was horrible, but it definetly did not do the book or the author justice.

Although I thought the flick was bizarre, I still want to read the book. Your review is on target.

Wow, I'm another one who wanted to watch this movie. Guess I'll save my NetFlix spot for something more deserving :)

I watched the movie and yes, thought it was very odd indeed. When I watched the features though and found out that it was based on fact or rather what Augustan preceived, I looked at the film from a different view. Wierder things have happened

Thanks for writing this review. I was on the fence about renting it. Did you read the book? I haven't done that either, but the book was a very highly touted one that sold a lot. Just wondering if it would be better to read the book rather than spend any time with the movie.
