Why Final Fantasy XII Didn't Measure Up to the Rest of the Series

Final Fantasy XII was released in 2006 for the Playstation 2. While critically-acclaimed and a financial success, the game drew some ire from hardcore fans of the series. So why Final Fantasy XII doesn't have the same hardcore
following as the more popular games in the series like Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X? Let's take a look at several factors.

Delays

Development for Final Fantasy XII was quite a bumpy road. It began in 2001 and took five years to be completed. Not to mention that the game's producer and director, Yasumi Matsuno, resign in the mid-way point. To make matters worse, the last single-player title was Final Fantasy X in 2001. Hardcore fans therefore had to impatiently wait for five long years.

For a popular series like Final Fantasy, the numerous delays were unacceptable. When Final Fantasy XII was finally released, the hype wasn't there as it would have been if the game came out earlier.

Non-Interactive Combat System

Just like Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII radically changes the combat system. Most of the battles are automated as your party will automatically attack in addition to the AI-setting Gambit system. While you can take direct control, much of the success is determined by how well you prepared the Gambit system beforehand.

As a result, you will spend more time watching the action on screen than actually playing Final Fantasy XII. Of course, this did not sit well with long-time Final Fantasy fans that were familiar with directly fighting epic battles.

Boring Gameplay Scenarios

Hardcore Final Fantasy fans are used to overcoming the odds and conquering a powerful evil. Those feelings were rarely expressed in Final Fantasy XII. Instead, the game frequently puts you into long fetch quests that involve exploring one dungeon after another. Final Fantasy XII simply lacked all the amazing set pieces Final Fantasy was known for.

Battle system was fine if a little easy to abuse. Story and characters were appalling. Boring generic blonde dude, boring generic blonde chick, boring tall lady (redeeming feature = bunny ears and porn star attire). Balthier and Basch were alright, but when the focal point is a pre pubescent teen and some chick with no personality then well...its not going to go too well. The story...or lack of it is the final nail in the coffin. RIP FF12.

Dang. I'm very frustrated with these people. I wish this never happened to me. This is very vexing. It should never have happened.

I never finished this game, because the story and characters were so uninteresting. If you said it was the best FF in the series, than you valued the action like fighting system over the story - which is a shame. The stories are what kept me into Final Fantasy games the most, feeling as if you're venturing with the characters - rather than playing a game. This just straight up, felt like a typical game...

I agree with this article. It was painful to try and finish this game. Luckily I just went out and bought the strategy guide so that I may finish it so that my buying of the limited edition was justified... thank goodness for the new rpgs coming out though, definitely got me my fix... (i.e. blue dragon, lost odyssey, etc.)

Why would anybody think that you can post something like that online and not get called out for it. This is the Internet, people will say and do anything under the vale of anonymity. _____________ joeschulman ffxi gil

I enjoyed this game much more than Final Fantasy X, which was pretty much a carbon copy of previous FF games, with upgraded graphics. It got fairly boring as I neared the later parts of the game. The combat system in FFXII is a needed upgrade. Real-time fights made getting in combat and leveling up much quicker. I don't understand why the author criticizes the automation of the battles. Most of the time in previous games, as the previous poster stated, you hit the same attack over and over again. I automated the boring actions, such as melee attacks, heals, and self-buffs. In important fights, I manually casted lots of spells just like in previous installments. I also don't see how delays in production make the game not measure up to others in the series; its completely unrelated. I do agree that the story and characters were not amazing (Balthier was by far the best character). I am surprised that the author did not mention the Espers and Quickenings which didn't scale

Why do you pose opinion as if it's fact? Me honestly (along with IGN and Famitsu Magazine) I feel it was one of the greatest Final Fantasy games ever. In my opinion, the best.

I completely disagree with this article..I am a hardcore FF gamer and was hoping that the games would finally mature and with FFXII so they did.. not only does the game play better then any previous game in the series but the story is actually interesting and has some underlying depth to it. FFVIII to FFX were getting more boring with each addition. And not to mention the art direction is unrivaled, no other Final fantasy game is visually this tight,FFVI comes close.IMO

Strange, seeing as it (the translated version) was the best Final Fantasy since FFIX. Great dialogue (this really surprised me), fantastic environments - the best in any FF, great Hunt sidequests, lousy loot system, better combat system. On that last note, it was either you pressing X mindlessly, or the game removing that illusion of control and taking over. You could still manually switch strategies on the fly based on which enemy you were facing.
