Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is considered to be the last game in the saga. Due to the series' popularity and Konami's heavy reliance on its success, a new Metal Gear title will certainly appear again in the future. So how can Konami improved on an already critically-acclaimed
series? Here are a few suggestions for the next Metal Gear title.
New Main Character
Many fans were upset when Solid Snake handed over his starring role to Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. This time, they probably wouldn't mind if Snake takes a back seat. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the last chapter in the saga surrounding Solid Snake. Therefore, anything else after the poignant ending will be nothing more than unneeded canon.
The new Metal Gear lead should be a change of pace of the long-running series. Perhaps being the villainous Revolver Ocelot or even Raiden again (in cyborg ninja form) may be the answer for the next Metal Gear game.
New Storyline
Solid Snake's story did not start with Metal Gear Solid. His story began more than 20 years ago in Metal Gear. Because of that, Konami should put the complicated but ultimately rewarding story to rest and start a completely new chapter. Doing so will draw in both old and new fans to the series.
The next Metal Gear game shouldn't have a convoluted and complicated story by filling it with twists and conspiracies like the last one. Instead, they should mainly focus on the series' strongest point: the character development.
More Focus on Gameplay
Putting less emphasis on story would also mean less cut scenes and overly long dialogues. This was actually planned for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but was later neglected because answering every question in the saga got a bit too grand.
If Konami choose to start from a clean slate, they don't have to worry about any past stories that need long cut scenes to explore. They then will be able to allocate their resources on their excellent gameplay the series is known for in the next Metal Gear title.
