An MLM business is actually called a multi-level marketing business. Another popular name for this is network marketing. Briefly, these businesses are so called because the sales force consists of multiple levels or marketers that profit from each other.

In a good MLM business, you will earn money from selling a product or service. You will also earn money from recruiting other people to sell that same product or service. Essentially, multi-level marketing is like a tiered affiliate program.

When deciding on what MLM program to become involved in, there are a few basic things you should find out. Number one, is there an actual product you can make money from selling? Two, is it possible to make some money without recruiting a lot of people? The answers to these questions should be "Yes."

Risk vs. Payoff

Most MLM companies require one time or monthly payments to participate. This, of course, means that you must be prepared to risk that amount of money. There is no guarantee of return on your investment.

Since an MLM company makes you money off the people you sign up, you will know how many you have to get to break even every month. For example, if the monthly cost is $20.00 and you earn $5.00 from each of your referrals, you will need to recruit four people to break even. However, if you sign up many more people, you will have a strong residual income.
