Many authors have turned to e-book publishing as a means of getting published. Unlike with the big name, New York based print book publishers like Silhouette, Berkley, Kensington, and others, breaking into the publishing world can a somewhat easier and quicker entry with an electronic book publisher. These publishers have fewer of the well-known authors who command major money advances and are willing to take a risk with a new, unknown author.

Many of the same criteria used in choosing a print publisher apply to the e-book publisher. However, there are a few distinctions. As with any choice, it's important to know where to look for the necessary information. Once there, an author must know what questions to ask.

Here's the How To Guide when choosing an e-book publisher.

Remember the Number One Rule. Don't pay the publisher anything. If a publisher asks for money, start seeing red flags waving in alarm. No reputable publisher will ask an author to pay for editing, proofing, book covers, or anything else. That's not to say a new author won't have to dole out money for promotional items, but the decision to purchase these items or services is strictly up to the author.

Whether dealing with a traditional print publisher or an e-book one, this fact never changes. The book must fit the publisher. As with any other publisher, make sure the book the publisher wants to place under contract fits with their current catalogue. Unless that publisher is starting up a new line and is willing to promote that new line, a different type of book won't attract their reader base.

Takeaways

  • Research a publisher before signing a contract.
