I've been trying to resist reviewing my favorite movie of 2006 because I know that a lot of the critics didn't care for it. I'm going to be in direct opposition to them. I will admit, however, that I'm a little prejudiced toward this film automatically because it has one of my favorite actresses: Sandra Bullock.Whether or not you like Keanu Reeves as an actor, you have to admit that he and Bullock have a magical on screen chemistry. I'm not sure exactly what makes them work together. They just do. They light up the screen.

"Lake House" focuses on two lonely people: Kate Forster (Bullock), a doctor who has recently moved to work in a Chicago hospital and Alex Wyler (Reeves), a young architect who is working in the construction of a new complex of houses on the outskirts of the city. They share a common bond in a lake house that, as it turns out, was designed and built by Alex's father.

As the film begins Kate is moving out of the lake house. She leaves a note for the new owner about where to forward her mail and to apologize for dog prints on the walkway and a box left in the attic. But when Alex arrives at the house, he doesn't find the paw prints or the box in question. He sends her back a note to that effect and this begins a sort of pen pal correspondence between the two that eventually escalates into something much more.

As time goes on, more and more inconsistencies come to light regarding the things about which the two correspond. Eventually, they figure out that the mailbox at the lake house is unique. It is serving as bridge between time; 2004 where Alex lives and 2006 where Kate does. Only half believing what is happening, the two continue to correspond, eventually falling in love.

Kate cannot believe her luck; after years of searching for the one heart that melds well with hers, he lives in a different time. She feels as if her heart is breaking. Alex, too, is disturbed and eventually hatches a plan for the two of them to meet in the future. He sets the time and the place but because of circumstances, he doesn't show. So the couple decide that time is against them and they should let go. But they simply cannot.
