Paris, France. City of Lights. City of Carousels. Montmartre, Notre Dame, le Louvre, L'Arc de Triomphe, le Tour Eiffel, le Centre Pompidou, les Champs Elysées, Forum des Halles, Jardin de Tuileries... To visit all of the top tourist attractions in Paris could take your family an eternity. Why consider taking your family on a day trip, or an even more time consuming overnight trip, when there's so much to do in Paris itself?

The answer is perspective. Paris is a top tourist destination for the family taking an international vacation, yet there is much more to France than the capital city. A day trip or overnight trip outside Paris will take your family through glorious scenery to a less urban experience. These nine fantastic family day trips and overnight trips from Paris cater to a variety of different family interests from the arts to outer space.

France's Loire Valley is accessible by day trip from Paris if your family travels by Très Grande Vitesse (TGV) train. In about an hour, your family can travel from Paris to the towns of Amboise and Mosnes with their intriguing family attractions. Three of the fascinating day trip options described here are in the Loire Valley.

France is delightful. I'll have to remember this when I plan my trips this summer.

If we ever build up the courage to take all 4 of our children to France, were taking this article with us as our "to do" list.

Carol, you've awakened a new love for France in me! These places sound excellent. I've studied the Loire Valley region in particular and it sounds heavenly. Thanks for providing such helpful commentary.

Great article. I missed all those trips since we stayed in Paris for the week we were there. On the other hand I think you have to stay in Paris a week before you start day trips out of it since there is just so much to see there.

I have never been there, but I would love to hop across the pond. I love your pic.

About 9 years ago I read a smal böip in the newspaper travel section about a town just about 30 minutes outside Paris that has been transformed into times medieval. When you enter the town, it is like stepping back in time. They live it, breath it. Like a whole town of RenFest fun. I have been on a quest ever since to try to find out what the name of the town is again.
