Cloth diapering is a wonderful choice for the environment. You can spare your local landfill from hundreds of poopy diapers from your wee one and if you know how to sew (even a little bit), I can show you how to spare your wallet from the cloth diapering costs.

With my first child, I spent a fortune on cloth diapering supplies. I bought everything brand new and the cuter is was, the better. I spent so much that after my son potty trained, I gave it all away so all those expensive nappies could get even more use out of them. Now I am pregnant again and have to start my cloth diaper stash from scratch. This time I realize the diapers do not have to be as cute or have perfect stitches as they are just catching poo so I'm going to offset a lot of cost by sewing my own fleece covers.

Fleece material is water repellent and will be soft on your baby's skin. It's also a good material to start out with because you can probably find lots for free in your closet. For example, I raided my old clothes and found 2 sweatshirts, a pajama set and a yard of scrap fleece fabric. By recycling this material I was able to make 8 newborn size covers and 3 small size covers. I spent zero dollars on the fleece fabric!

Now it may be a good idea to purchase some new and better quality fleece for the next ones, but don't spend too much money while you're still in the experimental stage of sewing cloth diaper covers. Work out the kinks and make mistakes with the stuff you have handy before you purchase the good stuff. Aside from the fleece material and of course some thread, the only other two notions you'll need to make your covers are Velcro and elastic. That's it!

Before you start the sewing process, you'll need to find pattern. If you search the Internet for "free cloth diaper cover pattern", loads of freebies are available for downloading. Just print out one that makes sense to you and explains where to place the elastic.
