In the grip of creative excitement, your business idea might seem to be the greatest epiphany since Sam Walton first rolled out Wal-Mart Discount City in Arkansas. In the harsh light of reality, however, you will discover flaws in your original business idea that need to be ironed out or manipulated to suit the market needs. Far too many business owners jump into their business ideas without first researching the market, the customers, the products and the potential revenue, which is surely a recipe for failure. Before you start talking with investors, learn how to research your business idea.

Analyze Your Market Niche. The first thing you should research when it comes to your business idea is the potential market niche. Will you be filling a hole in the marketplace? Often, business ideas are too broad and generic and, under closer scrutiny, prove not to be as ingenious as you thought. In order to succeed in today's competitive market, your business idea must be unique and creative and there shouldn't be an identical business already established.

Examine Potential Competitors. Although you might have a business idea that fills a previously unexplored market niche, you will still have competitors. Make a list of the competing businesses in your area and examine their business models. How will your business compare to theirs? And most importantly, will you be able to compete effectively with them?

Study the Demand. Even a great product must have a consumer base from which to draw revenue. If your product is over-priced or under-priced, there may not be many people who will want to purchase it, which will send your business straight down the tubes. Research your product ideas as well as your business ideas to make sure they'll pan out in a real situation.
