There are to many excellent heritage sites in eastern Ireland to take in on one short trip so here are some of the best to help you decide. This is part one of a two part series about the heritage sites of eastern Ireland. This is due to the significant number of popular and excellent heritage sites in this part of Ireland.

Ballyhack Castle
Located in historic Co. Wexford, Ballyhack Castle is one of the best heritage sites in eastern Ireland. The Castle is perched atop a step hill with an excellent view over the Waterford estuary. Highlights of this eastern Ireland heritage site are the tower house and the views. It is thought that the castle was built sometime in the mid 1400s.

Newgrange and Knowth
This is probably one of the best and most historically significant heritage sites in Ireland. It is also one of the most popular tourist stops and should not be missed if you are visiting the area. Newgrange is located in Co. Meath in the Boyne Valley. There is an extensive Visitors Centre that contains information about Newgrange and Knowth. If you only visit one eastern Ireland heritage site make it Newgrange and Knowth. It is possible to join a tour of these two monuments at the Visitor Centre and they last around thirty minutes. Due to the popularity of this eastern Ireland heritage it is recommended that you arrive early to ensure you will get the chance to enter. Facilities include parking, toilets, viewing areas, tearooms and an information point.

Castletown
Located just outside Dublin in Celbridge, Co. Kildare is Castleown. This eastern Ireland heritage site is a beautiful Palladian style country home. It is the largest of its kind in Ireland. The house was originally built for William Conolly in 1722. Over the years extensive renovations and conservation efforts have been carried out on the house. If you are visiting Dublin this makes a nice afternoon day trip.
