Five Reasons Why Resistance: Fall of Man is Better Than Resistance 2

For Resistance: Fall of Man fans, the sequel did not lived up to expectations. They felt that Resistance 2, while a good game, was far too different from the original hit. So why do they feel that Resistance 2 for Playstation 3 isn't as good as
the first title? Let's examine several factors.

Storytelling

Resistance: Fall of Man features one of the best stories in the first-person shooting genre. Humanity's struggle for survival against the mysterious Chimeras compelled many Playstation 3 gamers.

That sentiment was rarely expressed in the sequel. The main reason for this is that Resistance 2 was hard to follow due to its confusing storyline. This is because it did not have a narrator like the first game. So instead of having a compelling story, the sequel was just another generic tale in the first-person shooting genre.

Weapon Wheel

The weapon wheel in Resistance: Fall of Man really separates the Playstation 3 game from everything else in the genre. Having the ability to equip any weapon anytime you want gives you freedom to deal with the numerous firefights in any way you want.

Resistance 2 dropped the wheel system for a more traditional two-weapon system. Therefore, it lost the freedom and originality that made the prequel unique.

Campaign Co-op

Resistance: Fall of Man is one of the toughest first-person shooters on the market. For that reason in addition to a rather lengthy campaign, the prequel became a great cooperative game for two players.

Resistance 2 got rid of campaign co-op for a completely original eight-player online cooperative mode. Because of that switch, fans of Resistance: Fall of Man looking for another great cooperative game in the campaign to blast through with another friend were disappointed in Resistance 2.

Lack of Polish

Resistance: Fall of Man was surprisingly polished as a launch title on the Playstation 3. Although it may not be the most innovative title in the genre, its rock-solid gameplay and presentation made it into a cult hit.

I would also want to add the way the weapons work .. berserks.. how team death-matches don't feel like a team game at all, sotryline (boss fights) in general is just crap. I could go on for days about how shit R2 is

I'll give you story telling, and the weapon wheel. But the online coop in resistance too was really cool. Resistance Fall or man I think was a more complete game that R2 but the multiplayer for R2 totally wipes away any argument and this is from a dude who doesn't buy games for multiplayer. That and the massive boss fights were sick. R2 was kind of generic though making Hale in to master chief was weak.

That was only 4 reasons. 2 of them are basically invalid. Nice job.

RFOM is def the better game overall, though R2 does a few things better. The R2 campaign is utter garbage though, or maybe not garbage, but dishearteningly mediocre compared to RFOM's. R2 seems to be aimed at greater accessibility. In R2 your move speed is way slower and the lock-on aiming that happens when you look down the sight is almost belittling. The game is more about taking cover and popping out for shots. Additionally, the cross hairs are way more open and spread pretty wide while your moving without aiming down the sight. The two weapon system also removes any sense of strategic thinking as every encounter is telegraphed by the weapon placed conveniently beforehand. In short, R2 is more about whether you can point your cross-hairs at the enemy faster than the enemy can. RFOM had a fast move speed and crosshairs that were indifferent to your strafing. Thus you could shoot accurately while running, jumping or ducking. The fast move speed made keeping the crosshairs on

i agree, resistance fall of man was awsome, and so disappointed in the sequel

I'm a writer and game reviewer for That Gaming Site. I actually wrote the review for Resistance 2 on our site. As a games journalist i have noticed three things: First, I completely agree that removing the wheel from the first game was a mistake. The weapon wheel opened literally dozen of player options and game scenarios. It made tackling the more difficult areas of the game an almost tactical exercise as you questioned the best way to conquer your waiting enemies. Second, removing the 2 player campaign co-op was also a mistake, but the implementation of and 8 player co-op was genius. I still play regularly. Including both would have been phenomenal. Lastly, R2, as I point out in my review, is enjoyable, but a harder egg to crack overall. It is not as immediately enjoyable as the original, but with enough time invested it is just as fun of an experience. Different, but still good.

So true! Thanks for finally saying this. Not a single review picked up on the glaring flaws in R2. R1 was like Ratchet in 1955, while R2 was just a generic shooter.

now i know this isnt really a big deal but has anyone noticed that the glass in resistance 2 is alot worse than resistance 1? like why would they make something in the game worse as they advance in the series.. i thought it was supposed to be the other way around?

Ugh, an article that captures the spririt of whiney message boards, way to go. The wheel is overrated, and FoM was good but not compelling enough to buy. R2 has 8 player coop! it's unique, original and better than anything FoM had going for it. Get off you high "Fall of Man" horse.
