In 1860, the first U.S. zoo opened in New York's Central Park. Almost 150 years later, there are over 200 zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and many other non-accredited animal collections. At their best, zoos allow us to glimpse animals in habitats that mimic their natural environment. Recent advances in zoological studies have emphasized the role zoos can play in the conservation of endangered species.

With a world renowned reputation, the San Diego Zoo features more than 800 species of animals on 100 acres of land.. Many of the animals are in exhibits that are similar to their natural surroundings, and often many species of animals that co-exist in the wild are housed in the same exhibit. The San Diego Zoo also features a large collection of rare plants and raises many that are used as food by the animals.

The Lowry Park Zoo is considerably smaller than the San Diego Zoo, but it has a reputation much bigger than its size. With over 1800 animals, including many Florida species, on 56 acres, the Lowry Park Zoo is rated one of the top zoos for children by Child Magazine. The zoo features many exhibits that allow patrons to feed animals such as the Lorikeef and stingray exhibits. The Lowry Park Zoo is active in the conservation of many species including the Orangutan, the African Elephant and the Chimpanzee.

The Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington D.C. Was founded in 1889. The zoo's collection is split between two locations, a 163 acre campus at Rock Creek Park and the 3200 acre Conservation and Research Center near Shenandoah National Park. The conservation center is not open to the public. More than 2 million people visit the 163 acre campus every year. The zoo is perhaps best known for its Giant Panda exhibit, as well as it's Cheetah Conservation Station and Amazonia, a simulated rain forest.

We visited Omaha's zoo two weeks ago and it's still fabulous. The new butterfly and insect pavilion is just spectacular. If it keeps up it's recent pace of adding major new exhibits NEARLY EVERY year, it will eventually get the credit it deserves, at least among the well-informed. Sorry this sounds like an advertisement, but my wife and son and I love that place!

The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is one of the best. It has the worlds largest indoor rainforest and a giant desert dome. It definitly doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Re: The first zoo- Central Park Zoo was the second publicly owned zoo in the U.S., after the Philadelphia Zoo. However, while the Philadelphia Zoo was chartered in 1859, it did not open until 1874. Central Park's Zoo was chartered in 1864, but had been displaying a collection of donated animals for several years before that. Therefore, the first collection of animals available for viewing by the public was in Central Park. Like many "Best of" articles, this is subjective.

yeah, Omaha's should have been on here, and so should the Bronx Zoo! Don't forget though that the San Diego Zoo also runs the San Diego Wild Animal Park which houses another 3000 animals and 400 species, so I think it still takes the cake.
