Do you have a completed novel or novella that you are ready to publish? Have you decided you want to bypass the whole idea of submitting to traditional publishers? Maybe you want to try publishing using a POD publisher first and establish yourself as a writer, while learning everything you can about the publishing business. Whatever your reason for deciding to self-publish and use a POD publisher, there are several key points to keep in mind before you make up your mind as to which one you are going to use.

1. Price. Yes, price should play a part in your decision of which POD publisher you decide to use. There are POD publishers whose prices range from completely free to outrageously expensive. The truth is a lot is riding on price because it depends on how much work you are willing to do on your own as to which package you choose. If you choose a package that is free or low-cost then you will probably be responsible for a lot more work than one that is high cost. You will most likely have to provide your own cover art, and you will have to format and edit your book yourself, as well as market it. Anytime you are willing to let someone else do the work, the cost of POD publishing goes up as well, so it is important to keep this in mind.

2. Quality of print books. This is something else to take into consideration because not all POD publishers are equal. There are some which use the same printer every time for every book, and others that use a variety of printers. Sometimes this can make a difference because there is a chance that one printer's quality may not be equal to another, so this is something to check out when you are researching a POD publisher.

3. Reputation. Reputation plays a part in choosing a POD publisher as well. Research different POD publishers, talk to other authors who have used them and see what their feelings are towards their POD publisher. Don't just choose the first POD publisher who looks good on paper, or online because you may end up being very disappointed.

Takeaways
  • Some POD publishers have a high cost for their services, but offer little in return.
  • Interviewing authors that have used the POD you are interested in helps you know their reputation.
  • Not all reviewers will respond favorably to POD or self-published books.
Did You Know?
Some POD publishers use more than one printer to print their books. This can occasionally affect the quality of the print books you and your readers order.
