Let's face it life in western society can be stressful, and much of that stress stems from our jobs. Since our jobs are what make it possible for us to have a home, food, electricity and many other things, we tend to value them very highly. We do this by doing our best to show the bosses that we are worthy of continuing to be employed by them. However, with employer loyalty at an all-time low, companies that don't follow their own policies, the co-workers from hell, overtime, and employers who sometimes expect us to do the work of 2 or 3 people but get paid for the work of one it's very easy to become stressed.Coping with on-the-job stress is crucial to your well being, and to your life. Being stressed can cause a number of health related issues such as insomnia, low appetite, and panic attacks to name a few, not to mention it can make you irritable, and difficult to get along with. So, what can you do to cope with stress on the job?
1. Take your breaks. That's right, if you are working full-time you legally have the right to two fifteen minute breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Use them, get up from your desk or work area and go outside for fifteen minutes, or sit on a bench and read your book. Just move to a different area that doesn't relate to your work. Take a few deep breaths, or go for a short walk. You will be happy you did so, and your work, as well as your state of mind will improve because of it.
2. Don't skip or work through your lunch break. This might sound like a no-brainer, but it's amazing how many people don't take advantage of this opportunity to take a break. If at all possible, leave the building for your lunch break, become "unavailable" to your boss and your co-workers. Taking this hour to rest, have lunch and rejuvenate will go a long way towards reducing stress.
