I enjoyed visiting London, England almost four years ago. I hope what I learned will still be effective and applicable to your visit.

I selected a flight that was non-stop. I did this because it was at night and I wanted to sleep off some of the hours in the plane instead of being aware of a connecting flight. I knew once I arrived in London that it would be the middle of the day so I would need to stay awake until that night. I highly recommend fighting the urge to sleep once you arrive and immediately adjust to their schedule. This was not hard for me because I was so filled with excitement upon arriving in London that sleeping was not an option.

I recommend getting some English Pounds in the American Airport before leaving to England because it was helpful to have currency upon arriving to use for transportation to the hotel. I took out the remaining Pounds at an ATM machine via my American ATM card without a problem. There of course was a charge for using a bank other than the bank where my account was through.

Pack lightly. If at all possible, use as little luggage as possible. There are so many sights to take in and so many people on the sidewalks that it is hard to control luggage. On public transportation luggage can be a bother. Like the old tourism advise goes "if you cannot make it walking around your home block with the luggage-you might want to repack."

I recommend buying a Brit Rail pass in America and receiving via mail while still in America, if you plan on using the rail system in Britain. I heard that it is cheaper to purchase in America instead of purchasing in Britain. I used the Brit Rail to travel to Southern England as well as Wales.

Understand the way the Underground Subway System works. It may benefit you to buy a day pass. I did not travel by the double decker bus system since I did not want to wait for "the bus." The Underground seemed to be more user friendly for my traveling needs.

The Theatre District in London is enjoyable. Take on a show. I have heard that the London Teatre District is better than New York City.

Unles you like Royalty don't bother with Buckingham Palace. It is not a particularly interesting building. And the Changing of the Guard is just some soliders moving about. The tube gives you no feel for the layout of London, everyhing becomes little isolated patches around the tube stations. Great if you are going a long way in a hurry, but not for sightseeing. You don't wait long for buses, certainly no longer than the trek down escalators and long corridors in the tube stations AND having to wait on crowded platforms for hot, crowded trains, then having to change and wait again, then having to trek back to the surface... Especially don't go by tube from Leicester Square to Covent Garden - it takes 20 minutes overall, and is only five minutes walking

I agree with everything Erin suggested, since i had the joy and pleasure of sharing this wonderful trip to London, England with her. Another tip, vacations and trips rarely go exactly as planned, so be prepared for the unexpected and have lots of fun!
