Have you been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia? If so you are well versed in the symptoms. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by pain of the joints, tender spots, muscle pain, fatigue, insomnia, stiffness, memory problems, anxiety and depression. Nine out of ten people diagnosed with Fibromyalgia are women. Approximately 5% of the general population has symptoms of the disorder. Fibromyalgia affects how you feel and what you do. It has an impact on family relationships and the ability to work and earn a living wage.So you have Fibromyalgia? What can you do to stay functional and feel better, because the condition is not going to go away? You have to begin with lifestyle changes that will make you feel better. Discuss pain management with your physician. Pain often can be managed with non-narcotic pain killers. Certain anti-depressants have been found to alleviate the pain associated with Fibromyalgia. When none of these measures help there are non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celebrex, or lidocaine injections into the tender spots (trigger points) may prove helpful. Be proactive in your treatment. Your physician should take the time to listen and discuss the options available for treatment. That is what you are paying the doctor for. If he or she isn't open to frank discussion, get a new doctor. It is your body, your pain, and your money, so don't settle for less than good medical care.
Fibromyalgia may leave you sleepless, or at best sleep deprived. The next day you feel fatigued, too tired to drag one leg after the other. Attack that sleep problem head on and you may be able to win the war against fatigue. Eliminate caffeine from your diet, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. Reduce your sugar intake and alcohol should be restricted (will not mix well with your medication). Avoid strenuous exercise prior to bedtime and opt for gentle stretching exercises prior to retiring for the night.
