In today's fast-paced world where we seem to value work and money over family time, it can be hard to find time to share with family members. Decades ago, the family was a cohesive unit, taking trips together, spending time at the dinner table, and watching television together.

Now, the kids are too busy with homework or other obligations while parents are submerged in work, microwavable meals are available for the kids to eat at their convenience because Mom or Dad doesn't have the time to cook a full meal, and there is more than one TV in the house and no one can agree on the same show. Any other family time is perhaps limited to vacations in which relationships are forced to come happily together to make up for lost time.

Today, we have people who still remember the times when family came first and the people you shared your home with were more than merely roommates. Some others have kept the tradition going by raising their children in a healthy family environment and preventing the family unit from being a thing of the past. However, the number of family oriented people seems to be decreasing and many sources will agree.

I was raised in a home where family was important--we didn't always eat dinner together every day of the week and when Dad packed us up in the car for a Sunday trip we didn't always get along, but we had each other through it all. Mom and Dad assured me and my sister that we could always come to them for any advice.

Here are some tips for having good family ties and a greater sense of belonging. At least one day a week, have everybody sit down and eat together. "The family dinner table" has nearly become a concrete phrase that is discussed in relation to how much time families spend together; there are even commercials on TV encouraging people to start getting together at the table and just talking. Communication is key in any relationship, and eating dinner together can be a time where everyone can just relax and bond. Simple things like this matter the most.
