Take five minutes to look over the menu and the servers before eating at a restaurant. Those five minutes could determine if you really want to eat at the restaurant. Even though a dining place has a grade A does not mean that the there are not unsanitary servers. The majority of people do not want unsanitary servers waiting on them. This article not only shows diners what to look for but offers solutions to the problems.

Unsanitary Servers: Plate Contamination

The food is piping fresh and smells delicious. The wait for the main course has definitely increased appetites. The server has several plates to carry and carefully balances them on hands and arms. Did you notice that the back plate is against the server's chest? Did you notice that the back plates are being breathed on by server as they look down to place the plates on the table? Let's hope that the server does not have a cold while breathing on the food you are about to eat!

Solution: Carry plates on a serer tray. Carry plates at arm's length away from the body. Make several trips to the kitchen area to complete order instead of carrying too many plates. Have another server assist with bringing order to the table.

A second form of plate contamination that happens quite often is the thumb in the plate. As the server is setting the plate of food on the table, the thumb ends up on the plate. The problem arises when the thumb touches food on the edge of the plate. Let's hope that the server's hands are very clean!

Solution: Servers should grasp plates with the ball and palm of the hand. Plates should be carried on the flat of the palm to easily slide off of the hand to the table. If a thumb must be placed on the plate, make sure not to stick in the customer's food.

Unsanitary Servers: Drink Contamination

Thanks for the near-spittake at your comment, Joyce! My personal pet ick -- though it's typically counter service -- is when the employee handles money, and then touches your food without gloves -- or when they're wearing gloves to protect the food, and touch the money with the gloves too. Duh!

Really good article. I know my brother works at the bakery in a grocery store. He told me to check who packaged things if I ever buy any bakery products there because his boss will drop things on the floor and pick them up and packaged them still.

I once watched a teenage boy at a Pizza shop apply cheese to a pizza, put some cheese in his mouth (actually putting his hand INSIDE his mouth), then put his hand back in the bin of cheese to apply more to the pizza. Needless to say, I did NOT purchase food there ever again. Great article!
