Sumter County, South Carolina Serves Adults with MR / RD

The town of Sumter is the heart of Sumter County and is a plethora of cultural activities, community events and services people of all ages and types. There is something for everyone in Sumter. The location of Shaw Air Force Base, Carolina Technical College and a branch of the University of South Carolina, Sumter has all the pizzazz and style of a large city but with a population of 40,000 the feel of a small town.

For adults with Mental Retardation and Related Disabilities (MR/RD) or for families who take care of adults with MR/RD the choices of places to go and things to do are often limited. However, Sumter recognizes people with MR/RD as residents and citizens as equal to anyone without a disability.

This center is currently working with Sumter County Disabilities and Special Needs Board (SCDSNB) and has opened up an exercise class for SCDSNB's consumers, who also utilize the basketball court and walking track. However, the walking track is upstairs and not wheelchair accessible. There is also a pool, weight center, aerobics, women's fitness center, men's fitness center, racquet ball courts and a variety of exercise programs and activities.
