The Eastern Shore of Maryland

Part I - Easton, Maryland

If you are looking for a unique family vacation The Eastern Shore of Maryland is perfect in many ways. There are three main areas that I consider The Eastern Shore: the towns of Easton and St. Michaels and Tilghman Island. I will devote this article to the Town of Easton. I will review St. Michael's and Tilghman Island in future articles.

Easton is about an hour ride from Baltimore or Washington, DC via Route 50 over the Bay Bridge. It is easy to get to and you will see beautiful countryside during your trip to Easton, MD and the Eastern Shore. Leave all the city noise and confusion behind so you can enjoy the laid back atmosphere of The Eastern Shore of Maryland.

The kind and warm hearted people of The Eastern Shore refer to it as "God's Country". My maternal grandmother's family lived in Easton, Md. I spent a lot of time in the area over the years. Most of my great aunts and uncles lived well into their late 90's and early 100's. My third cousin was the Mayor of Easton for many years. My husband and I were married at the courthouse in Easton.

Easton, founded in 1710, is the county seat of Talbot County. To this day Easton retains much of its small town charm. You can walk the cobblestone sidewalks and visit the local shops and restaurants. If you love seafood The Eastern Shore is the place to go and Easton has a nice selection of restaurants.

You can stay at any of the chain motels along Highway 50 such as the Holiday Inn Express or Comfort Inn. If you prefer something small with charm try one of the Bed and Breakfasts such as Easton's Promise.

For the ultimate stay check out The Tidewater Inn located in town. The Tidewater Inn has been around for over 60 years and it is pet friendly. The Tidewater Inn was where my husband and I had dinner after our courthouse wedding. We enjoyed their Friday night seafood buffet. The main lobby of the hotel takes you back in time with its huge fireplace and impressive staircase to the second floor.
