The Declaration of Independence serves an effective communication tools model. Within the Declaration of Independence there are several components that demonstrate impressive communication skills. These men were focused on creating a document that would address the concerns and needs of the general population. In fact, the writers of this document were not only representing the people in the government but speaking for the entire United States. The Declaration of Independence contains a well defined purpose, concise factual information in a well arranged and reasoned argument and flows smoothly for the information presented.

A key to any presentation is the ability of the writer to clearly define the purpose of the message. Communication is ineffective if the audience is left not even knowing the meaning or purpose of a presentation. The Declaration of Independence is an excellent example of precise communication. Paragraph one of this document clearly defines that the Declaration of Independence is dissolution of political bands between the United States and the King of Great Britain. (Declaration of Independence) To further clarify the purpose of the document, the first line of the second paragraph states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." (Declaration of Independence) There is no question left in the reader's mind about the purpose of this document. From the very beginning it is clearly stated what issue is being addressed. Communication misunderstandings arise when both parties are unclear as to the purpose of the dialogue. With the Declaration of Independence there is no room for misunderstandings of intent and purpose of the document.
