It's absolutely irresponsible! It's stupid! It's inconceivable why anyone would want to 'settle down' so early! Don't you want to live your life first? How foolish!

If you married early in your life, it's likely you've been subjected to a similar litany of complaints generously dished out by peers and older adults. If you did not marry early in your life, it's likely you've either spoken or thought these thoughts when you heard a young friend or schoolmate had married. Of course, these thoughts are understandable. With the divorce rate at nearly 50%, you'd think people would put more careful consideration when deciding at what point in their life they choose to marry and with whom they plan to spend the rest of their life. So naturally, to most people, the phrase "teen marriage" conjures up images of irresponsible, immature teenagers who, not only lack wisdom, but prudent forethought. I wouldn't dare deny this. From my own (perhaps limited) observations, many married teens are irresponsible and immature. Most don't even possess an ounce of forethought.

Takeaways
  • Many married teens are irresponsible and immature. Most don't even possess an ounce of forethought.
  • You need to be able to recognize your needs and effectively convey these needs to your spouse.
  • Emotions and feelings are fickle. Good choices and commitments should be unwavering.
Did You Know?
I, myself, married at the age of 18, right before my first quarter at a university. He was 19.

Me and my future husband me 17 and him 16 just got engaged on our 1 year aniversary to us nothing can get in the way of our love even though we may be young and according to adults we don't know what "love" is but since the divorce rate is at 50% I guess adults don't know what love really is either. We're not planning on getting maried antime soon but once we go to college and have our life starightened out and down the right path were thinking on settling down. Many people say we will grow appart but I don't think that will happen to anyone who was engaged at 16 and went to college please respond to this and tell me if things worked out for you.

Not only is my marriage controversial because of my age (I'm 18, been married for five months), but I also married someone seven years older. To top it off, my husband has a four year old daughter. Two months out of high school I became a stay-at-home-step-mom. Is it tough? Yes, but what major life transition isn't difficult, especially at first? My hubby and I have gone against plenty of stereotypes without even trying, and so far it has happened with our marriage. Good article, Aude Cogitare.

My husband and I got married at 22 and 24 (respectively) after being together for 7 years. We waited until I finished grad school and he finished college, but we made the decision to married after being together for one year (16 and 18), and college/grad school was really the only obstacle to delaying that decision. So we're currently married 5 years and together for 12. Age is just a number.

Good article. I married at 19 and had a great marriage until he died about 12 years later. Also, from reading a comment on another article, i see that you have a husband with Asperger's. How do you feel this might fit in with having a successful marriage. I have an Asperger's grandson and know about the wonderful honesty and other refreshing qualities of these people. I think you could do an informative article on this too. Continued good luck, and good writing!
