Overall, the 2007 Academy Awards ranks as the most entertaining since David Letterman took to the stage to introduce Uma to Oprah. Of course, no Oscar telecast would be worth watching without some snafus.

Why Hollywood Nepotism Is Always a Bad Idea

Will Smith's son. His stiff reading of his lines and the leapfrogging over the announcement of a winner to get to the next list of nominees serves to make one wonder if he could possibly have gotten a part in his dad's movie if his last name wasn't Smith.

Biggest Waste of Time

What the heck was the deal with that collection of clips put together by Michael Mann supposedly about America? It had nothing to do with anything that either preceded or succeeded it and you could have taken those exact same clips and applied almost any theme at all to them. The producers are already painfully aware of how long the Oscar telecast normally is, so why waste time with something as devoid of meaning as this? Runner-up: That painful sequence involving film clips and a choir.

Worst Musical Moment

Although in a way, it was also the best. The Dreamgirls song trilogy felt more like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I mean those songs went on forever and they were just plain awful. Still, it was interesting to watch Beyonce Knowles seem to turn it into a competition to prove that she, and not Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, was the best singer on stage.

Actress Most Likely to Play Wednesday Addams as a Grown-Up
Eva Green. Wow. Did you see that makeup job?

Strangest Upset

Okay, explain to me how Pan's Labyrinth seems to be on its way to winning the most awards of the night, beating out other Best Picture nominees in lesser categories, but manages not to win Best Foreign Language Film? This one is just plain strange.

Worst Presenters

Okay, I get having two international stars introduce the foreign language film clips and nominees. But couldn't there have been at least one with an accent that was understandable?

Takeaways
  • Can we just do away with the live musical performances forever?
  • Nepotism is worse in Hollywood than Washington.
  • Too many clips spoil the soup.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention those idiotic "human interest" tidbits that the unseen lady announcer would give when someone won. My favorite was the one about the guy who had to quit his job as Matthew Broderick's assistant in order to write the script for Little Miss Sunshine. I mean the way it was phrased it sounded like Matthew Broderick wouldn't let the guy write the script while he worked for him. Which sounds perfectly understandable, actually. (No, I'm not a big fan of LMS.) There was literally nothing of any actual interest about the winners that this woman shared. Were they all really that boring or did they just not feel like doing any more research than clicking on the "Trivia" link on each person's IMDB profile?

The Oscars were too long and you're right there were too many clips. I'm just so happy that Forrest Wittaker and Scorse won. I know I thought Pan's Labyrinth would win too, b/c it was taking home all the awards, but unfortunety it didn't. And I didn't see the German film that won eithier. Great article Tim, as always.

Hey Will Smith's kid was cute and probably very nervous. He's what 6 or 7? Give him a break he wasn't that horrible. But another great article. Thanks again.

I agree with the Pan's Labyrinth point-I was sure it was a lock...I haven't seen the German film that won, but I can't imagine it being better..
