As seniors get access to great healthcare and live a higher quality of life, they are now creating a demand for gadgets that enable them to live more comfortably and provide them the tools they need to live safely and independently. Many seniors are technically savvy and are not afraid to explore new technologies that are developed. This has spawned an industry dedicated to gadgets for forward thinking seniors. Below are some that I thought were really interesting:

HP Printing Mailbox - Send emails and notes to your grandparents without them needing an internet connection, or email. This is a great way to send those wonderful pictures of the grandchildren's proud moments, share your news, or just keep in touch with seniors who might not be able to access the Internet. The mailbox plugs into a regular phone line and power. Yes, it's that simple. Requires a subscription (starts at $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually). http://www.presto.com/

System Two Pro Telephone - This phone allows seniors to access the phone by using a remote control that they can carry around with them. The phone automatically turns on the speaker phone so that the senior can talk without having to pick up the phone. The speaker phone can also be activated in the event that the senior has fallen and can't get up to call for help. 911 can be automatically dialed. http://www.firststreetonline.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C7866%7C44674&id=49359

Jitterbug Phone - Tired of all the doo-dads and other fancy but unnecessary things cellphones can do? Want a phone that is simply...well...a phone? Then this is the phone for you. The Jitterbug phone is JUST a phone. It is great for seniors because it comes with a large keypad, large screens and text, and has relatively cheap service. Cost for service starts at $10 per month, paid annually. This phone is great for seniors who just want to make quick calls, or call someone in the event of an emergency. http://www.gojitterbug.com/
