The internet has become increasingly about personalization and convenience. MySpace, the most popular social networking site, allows users to place pictures, songs, and written content on their own 'spaces.' The popularity of MySpace has propagated other free service websites for MySpace page enhancement, allowing users to simply copy and paste image and other codes onto their page for convenience. These content and layout sites generate most of their income through pop-up ads. The most inventive personalization feature to date is Meez, a feature allowing users to create a free 3-D rendering and place it on their MySpace page or other site. A Meez is fully customizable and is rendered just like a character from The Sims or Second Life only with more personal features to complement your interests. Meez follows trends seen on Yahoo! avatars, but offers more variety.
Your Meez can include vintage jewelry, pirate gear, goth clothing, unicorns, preppy clothes, and sports attire. You can exemplify and display your exact interests on your Meez as the lists to choose from are extensive. You can customize the hair color and style of your Meez, eye color, and lip shape.
As MySpace popularity grows, so does the need for privacy and caution. Meez has inadvertently created a way for users to place images of themselves on MySpace without using actual photos.
Instead of generating most revenue from ads, Meez charges for certain virtual items. These items are paid for with Coinz, which can be bought via a credit card or Paypal account, or earned by referring other users to sign up for their own Meez. The majority of items do not require Coinz, but occasionally users will encounter items that cost Coinz. Meez also employs the use of unobtrusive ads to finance their site.
The site also has its own features. Users have profiles, which allow them to add media, typical profile information, and a MySpace page link. This page can be set to public or private. Each user gets an album, to which he or she can save different Meez looks. This allows each user to have up to five Meez looks displaying different interests or moods.
