Local Houston, Texas Farmers Markets

As a consumer, I tend to grocery shop quite frequently and it is so easy to hop in the car and zip on over to the nearest Kroger or HEB. Every now and then, when the weather is nice, I remember to visit local farmers markets and as soon as I take a bite of anything I purchase I remember why shopping local is so great! Houston harbors some fantastic farmer's markets. Whether you are looking for certified organic or simply local products, Houston's markets have it all!

As a local, it is so easy for me to forget sometimes how close to home they really are located. As a child, I remember my grandparents always taking me to Canino's Produce market. When I lived inside the loop my favorite was the Saturday Market in the Heights. I recently moved out to the Copperfield area and there's one that's great out here too. It's seems like no matter where I am in Houston there is a farmers market to visit.

The Heights farmers market, located behind Onion Creek Coffee House at 3601 White Oak, is open Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon. A favorite of the locals, the Heights Farmer's Market offers a variety of fresh baked goods, local and organic produce, local and organic dairy products, local preserves and jellies and so much more. To find out more information or see what vendors participate, please go to

For more availability, go to Canino's Produce. Canino's is open EVERY day from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Here you can buy bulk or individual and the market is huge! You must go to the very back for the best deals and your hard to find items. They even sell fresh tamales. I love the everyday availability of Canino's. Canino's is located at 2520 Airline Drive, Houston, TX 77009.

Last year I moved out to the burbs. Originally I was scared that I lost so much of the localness of the inner loop. One day, I SAW THE SIGN. Farmer's Market - Saturday and Sunday - 290 and Huffmeister. Woohoo! Although, I recently discovered it and haven't had time to go I look forward to it. I did confirm that the market is only open on the weekends and is located off the 290 and Huffmeister exit going west/north.

Local produce offer more nutrients than corporate produce because of less transport time.
