Every state in the U.S. including Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Alaska has small groups or "meet ups" based on common interests. Meetup.com also has branches worldwide in over thirty different countries, including the U.K and Canada.

Here's how it works. The website is organized so that you can browse local meet ups by location or topic. If you wanted to start with location, then you would pick the Canadian territory, state or country that works best for you. Then you can choose among nineteen various categories, such as hobbies or finance, and narrow it down to topics that appeal to you. For instance if you were interested in joining a book club you could choose "books" as a category, pick "classics" as a topic and join a meet up in your local area that discusses classical books.
