Does anyone remember the type of birthday parties you went to when you were 4, or 5 or 6 years old? I do. They were all house parties, for starters. A bunch of kids were invited and showed up. Not kids and their parents, not kids and their parents and their uninvited siblings, just the kids that were invited. The parents of the birthday child lead us in a couple of organized activities like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Musical Chairs and Hide and Seek. The winners got prizes, just the winners. We probably ran around a bit and entertained ourselves until it was announced that it was time for cake. There was a paper table cloth on the dining room table, some matching napkins, plates, cups and if you were lucky, nut cups filled with candy. There was a sheet cake with some plastic figures of clowns, or Mickey Mouse on it or, if your mom took the cake decorating class at the local high school, there was a character cake or a bowl cake with a Barbie doll sticking out of it. We all put on party hats, sang happy birthday, had cake and ice cream and punch, got a plastic goodie bag filled with candy and cheap plastic toys like kazoos and yo-yos that broke within an hour of going home. By then our parents were back to pick us up and we went home. Now I need to say at this point that I am 36 years old. So I was attending these parties circa 1975. The coolest thing ever was when one of my friends had her party at McDonald's and we all got a cheeseburger, fries, orange punch and cake.
