In the summer of 1984, Penthouse magazine announced they would be publishing racy and provocative photos taken of reigning Miss America ,Vanessa Williams. Miss Williams' previous mark of distinction was being the first black Miss America. The pictures were to capitalize on her fame and make money. Penthouse created the hype to boost sales and as is the American way, make money. These maneuvers were logical in the sense the motive was to strike at the right time and receive the highest monetary value on the product. Unbelievably the real intention was not to create harm. Though Vanessa did turn in her crown and had no stake in the original venture, she has gone on to become a one-woman industry in the legitimate entertainment field.

New times bring new twist

As the years since past, someone unveiling racy, sexual explicit or whatever photos of a celebrity has become commonplace. The frequency has been so great that instead of raised eyebrows such situations conjure head shaking and comments of not again. Katie Rees conspicuously lost her Miss Nevada title (see: Inequity a Staple of Our Society - Miss USA Tara Connors to Keep Her Crown) to the newest variation on the theme. With the internet being the world's showcase Miss Rees had racy pictures of her past antics posted on the web. The twist being it was just for kicks not money. The trend continues as American Idol contestant, Antonella Barba, has reached popularity and gained exposure through alleged pictures post of her in racy and sexually explicit shots.

What do the new breed of posters gain?

Could these be acts of revenge, jealousy or just plain stupidity? Antonella Barba and Kathy Rees may wind up being the next Vanessa Williamses. In essence, these acts could rocket fuel their careers. All the posters will gain is their fifteen minutes of famous for being moronic.

There is a lesson to be learned
