Dear Barack,

I'm 26 years old and I never voted for anyone in an election for anything until this past November. I don't think politicians can be trusted. I don't think they care about my interests. I don't believe them when they say they're looking out for the little guy - on the odd occasion these days when they even bother to say it. Politics in America is corrupted and perverted, and power has been pulled from the many into the hands of the privileged few.

I'm not a Republican or a Democrat, my beliefs don't fit into either category of liberal and conservative; I just believe in what I think is right. I don't think I'm all that different from most people in that respect. Whatever we believe, most of us just want to do what we feel is right, and we think it'd be nice if a few of our leaders wanted the same thing. I've abandoned any belief that politics as it exists today can do anything good for the people. That's why I'd like it very much if you were for real.

You seem like a smart guy, but more importantly like a genuine guy. When you laugh at something, it looks like you actually think it's funny, and you're not just being patronizing. You're a good sport; when you participate in something like that video open for Monday Night Football a few months back, you seem to legitimately be enjoying yourself and not just doing it because one of your college student interns told you it would be "cool." When you talk extemporaneously to people, I get the impression you're actually listening to the people and responding to what they are saying, rather than looking for holes to plug with pieces of a stump speech.

And when you do give a prepared speech, it at least seems as though you've read it prior to the occasion and have some conviction about what you're saying.

Kristin, I think "Don't disappoint us" says it far better, and far more succinctly, than I did. For the first time (and maybe the last, who knows?) in my life, there is a politician with a chance at the presidency who I truly believe in, and would like to see elected. Many of us here in the U.S., and, it seems, a great multitude of our neighbors outside the country, think that Barack Obama is exactly who we need at this moment in history. I hope he gets his chance, and, like you, I hope like hell he doesn't screw the pooch.

Excellent job. I often dream of what I would say to Mr. Obama and you took the words right out of my mouth. "Just don't dissapoint us" is the bottom line. To many of us, he is the answer to our prayers.

though I strongly disagree, I feel that your piece was very well ritten. You have very interesting views. It is awesome to see how others view things. It doesn't hurt to see something that is different than you, which is why I read this. Good work.

August 02, 2007: When I first read this, I did not picture Senator Obama as being someone that would allow others to tell him what to do and what to say. Now I am sadly thinking that he did exactly what you warned him not to do. Sigh. His recent speech on "the war on terrorism" has him sounding just like present admin, so I am undecided if I can vote for him. Sad.

Hi, Alyce Rocco suggested that I read this article also. Basically, I have not decided who I will vote for in the up coming election. I am just weighing all the issues and candidates right now. I have a article on Black Republicans waiting to be reviewed. I guess I would be considered an undecided voter. I like Obama, and I also like Clinton[I am a registered democrat] BUT I am also curious about the Republican Party and their background- not just the mess that the Bush Administration has gotten us into. EXCELLENT ARTICLE Steve!

Alyce suggested I read this piece and so here I am. You hit it dead on when you commented on people who say that Obama is too inexperienced to run. That drives me insane when people say that. That man can/has practiced as a lawyer and knows the law inside out. I'd rather someone who understands the legal system be over the government than someone who just understands how to farm.

Excellent! Mr. Obama is well aware of voters apathy and cynism and disgust. Thus far he has not lost his idealist edge and I believe he is tough enough for the position, but fear for his life on account of the racism that still exists in the USA today.
