There are many who see little bunnies as cute adorable little creatures which nobody should ever harm, but to others the sport of rabbit hunting is one which requires much patients as well as skillfulness. In addition rabbit hunting is a great tradition which brings much enjoyment to those who take part. The use of a dog in rabbit hunting is a common choice. By using dogs they will bring the rabbits out in the open where the hunter can see them as well as help to locate areas where many rabbits dwell. In addition to the hunting benefits a hunting dog brings to the rabbit hunting sport, they can also serve as a great companion to the hunter.
If you choose to hunt without the assistance of a hunting dog, the sport can be quite difficult. You will have to learn all you can about the rabbit and find its pathways and where he will stop for food. You will also have to learn where they tend to live and gather. The spring of the year is the best time to hunt rabbits. Rabbits will be more out in the open enjoying the warmth of the sun once winter is over. You will find that while you can hunt rabbits in the winter months it can be more difficult to be successful as they tend to find branches to hide behind.
Rabbits will run from side to side for short periods of time. When they start to run again they will change the pace of their running or course until the reach their safe place. The race is on and you will have to beat the rabbit at his own game before he reaches the safety of his hole. Once the rabbit is in its hole the hunt is over for the day.
When tracking a rabbit you should move slowly and quietly as possible. Take your time before firing the first shot as this will alarm the rabbit and you may not have another good opportunity to kill your prey. At the same time you will need to be assertive when hunting rabbits. When you are hunting rabbits, you should use what is called the "stop and go" method. This method consists of the tip-toe technique which utilizes stalking the rabbit and watching its movements. At the same time, you will need to be moving towards the rabbit. When the time is right then you will be able to shot your prey.
