A group of college students are to team up in groups to write a cult-related research paper. One group gets together to do a paper on the Kwan Yin cult and they discover a cursed amulet and the spirit of a man who wants its power.

I was sent Ghost Game (2005) by Joe Knee last year and it was reviewed favorably by Jon Knight. So, Joe had Maverick Entertainment send me a copy of his latest work, Cult. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect but the trailer made it look interesting. I wanted to go into the movie with little knowledge beforehand so as not to skew my expectations which, for low budget films, is usually the best plan. So I opened the retail casing and found a necklace with one of those mood-changing charms hung on it (extras are always cool! I guess every retail copy comes with one but don't quote me on that! (John envisions an influx of inquiries to Maverick Entertainment's sales department complaining about their "missing" necklaces. *snickers*).

I popped the disc in, watched a few cool trailers and the professional-looking menu setup and then started the main movie.

I really liked the intro. We first see a montage of "old" Chinese paintings and a man with a perfect "movie trailer voice" describing the history and legend of how the cursed necklace with medallion was created. Just a quick rundown. A Chinese leader's daughter, Kwan Yin, who became pregnant with a child out of wedlock. The father got mad and killed her by stabbing her in the stomach to kill the baby and her body and in her eyes to kill her soul. She wore a necklace and the time and it became imbued with powers and a curse. Someone dug it up and so began a cult for the Chinese woman and the "cursed" necklace.
