When most of us think of getting a new pet, we think of a cute kitten or a playful puppy, but a pet rabbit can satisfy your need for a furry companion, be low maintenance and great for apartment dwellers. However, they are not good first pets for children, they require bunny proofing if they are allowed outside their cage and they require regular veterinary care just like other animals.

Rabbits can usually be found for sale for a very reasonable price at most pet store. They are also often found at animal shelters because many people buy them at Easter time and then abandon them when they realize they require care and aren't just something that looks cute. Just because rabbits are inexpensive to get doesn't mean that they don't need just as much devotion and care as other pets.

Rabbits can be quite social with people and other animals if given the chance to interact with them. Rabbits and cats generally get along well, but more caution would be shown with dogs as they may try to chase the rabbit and injure it even if they only mean to play with it. Also, although most rabbits enjoy being petted, they generally don't like to be picked up or held so they are not good pets for children who like to pick up, carry round and hug their pets.

Since rabbits are small and can spend time in their cage when you aren't there to supervise them they make great pets for those who live in an apartment or small living space. Also, while they do require exercise and must have a cage large enough to provide moving and jumping, they don't require that you walk them.
