Earlier this week we discussed inexpensive ways to customize your home. There are so many resources available today that allows you to purchase materials at a discounted price. That's why it's important to do your research and shop around to compare prices and the quality of materials.

Today we're going to look at ways to update one of the most widely used rooms in your home, the kitchen.

Today's kitchen trends are so diverse, it's hard to know what style to stick with in order to get the most resale value. I have seen kitchens done in the high-tech styles that boast mostly stainless steel and open cabinetry and then I've seen the more Tuscan style décor that tend to use lots of tumbled marble on the counters and floors.

I would say you would be safe to keep it simple in the kitchen in order to attract the largest range of buyers. After all, with new construction popping up on every corner, it's a buyers market, so you have to be competitive.

1. The Walls - I would suggest a neutral color that would appeal to most buyers such as linen, taupe or perhaps a light sage. The thing you want to do is allow the buyer to see themselves living in your home. I recall about two years ago when I went to see a model home and when I walked into the kitchen I was overtaken by bight red walls and black on black appliances. It was a horror! I couldn't believe that this was a model home because the color choices were just plain wrong. I know black appliances are in, but these appliances looked as though someone took automobile paint and painted them in the garage. Needless to say I did not purchase that home.
