If you own or manage a business, chances are, you'll eventually hire one or more people with learning disabilities. This isn't a bad thing at all, but there are things you should know to effectively run your business. It is important for the workplace to not only provide accommodations for people with physical handicaps, but also to create a positive, professional environment for those with learning disabilities. Read on to learn more about improving the atmosphere of your workplace with regard to employees with learning disabilities.Establish Policies and Procedures for Disabilities in the Workplace
The first thing that you, as a business owner, needs to do is establish consistent policies and procedures regarding disabilities as a whole. By law, your business must comply with federal and state statutes as an Equal Opportunity Employer. Further, your business must be aligned with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) so that you don't open yourself up to legal problems. If you aren't sure how to go about this, you can always enlist the help of your local Chamber of Commerce or the SBA (Small Business Administration).
Creating these policies and procedures for employees with disabilities isn't enough, however. You should have at least one employee who is responsible for staying abreast with regulations regarding both physical and learning disabilities to make sure that your business remains in compliance. Have this individual work on a training program for all employees so that your business is composed of educated people who understand the laws as well as your business' policies.
