Illegal Surveillance Programs, Data Mining and the Secret to Becoming like W.S. Auden's "The Unknown Citizen"

Do you really want your local Department of Motor Vehicles to be under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security? The same brilliant minds who were the architects of the massively disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina? There is a plan afoot to have what is commonly regarded
as the most inept bureaucratic organization in the United States-not to mention the Cabinet Department that recently was reported as having the lowest morale-oversee the reorganization by which every driver in America would have to get a new driver license. In theory, this new license would somehow serve the war on terror by making it more difficult for a terrorist to procure a fake ID. It kind of reminds me of that hoary old argument that the NRA and other gun nuts use against strengthening gun license laws. You know, a criminal isn't going to buy a traceable gun from a legitimate gun owner so why punish honest people by making it harder for them? Seems to me a terrorist can pretty easily get a fake idea without going down to the local DMV and waiting in line.
