Most people think that dry cleaning is usually the best method for cleaning garments and clothing. The problem is that dry cleaners use extremely high heat, chemicals and even machine iron clothes. Some of clothing would do better to be washed at home rather then at the dry cleaner.

White Fabrics

If clothing comes back from the dry cleaner with a "clean and crisp" odor then the dry cleaner used recycled chemicals on the clothes. For white fabrics these chemicals can leave stains that show up later and decrease the wear time on the clothing. White cotton dress shirts will eventually have a yellow tint to them after being taken repeatedly to the dry cleaner. Some synthetic white fabrics will immediately have a slightly yellow color after being dry cleaned.

It is important to ask the dry cleaner to use virgin cleaners on anything that is white. It is better to have the virgin cleaners on the fabrics then to risk deposits from recycled cleaners.

An alternative is to hand wash or machine-wash the white fabrics on delicate. Hang on a hanger to dry.

Cotton Dress Shirts

Cotton dress shirts are machine ironed at the cleaner. The machine will wet the inside of the shirt and then steam iron it. Even though the shirts are without a single pleat and look extremely nice, the machine ironing is destroying the shirt fabrics. There will be significantly less wear time for the cotton dress shirt.

The other problem with machine ironed shirts is the yellow effect. The majority of cotton shirts will begin to have a yellow or dingy tint to them after several machine irons.

It is important to ask the dry cleaner to hand iron any cotton dress shirts.

Sweaters

With the occasional stain or accident, it is tempting to take sweaters to the dry cleaner. Dry cleaner chemicals are extremely harsh on sweater fabrics. Most people are better off spot cleaning the sweater, hand washing and lying on a folding rack to dry. The sweater will maintain its color, shape and texture much better then having the fabric exposed to the dry cleaner chemicals.

Suits

Takeaways
  • It is important to ask the dry cleaner to use virgin cleaners on anything that is white.

Something I learned working at the dry cleaners was that dry cleaning is actually very unsanitary. The clothes are cleaned with a chemical that is sprayed on, but there is not a filtration process like when something gets wet. Some clothes must be dry cleaned because the fabric will ruin on contact with water, but not all. I thought it was really gross when I learned that. Great article.
