Paris is a likely destination on many a European vacation, and a city renowned for its charm and culture. But after you've seen La Tour Eiffel, Louvre and Champs Elysee, what's left to do in this sensational city? Parisians will tell any traveler that these landmarks by no means define or scratch the surface of the treasures hidden in the ancient boulevards. For a real glimpse at Paris and life beyond the long lines of tourists waiting outside museums, take a tour down cobblestone streets and less ventured neighborhoods.

Most travelers begin with the big attraction: La Tour Eiffel. While this monument lends spectacular city views, the line to the top can be daunting. Just across the river, and north of the impressive Arc du Triomphe, lies the posh 8th district of Paris. The city is divided into arrondissement - or neighborhoods - and the 8th serves as home to many of the most luxurious residences. Take a stroll down tree lined Avenue Foche or grab a baguette and a spot on the lawn of Parc Monceau. The surrounding architecture will intrigue even the most art-history-challenged visitor.

While you're visiting the gothic masterpiece Notre Dame de Paris, consider taking the short walk to the other island in the city center, Ile Saint-Louis. Its one-way streets are charming and quieter than its Ile de la Cite counterparts. Also, Saint-Sulpice, a church that rivals the beauty of Notre Dame, is located just a few minutes walk south. The structure was made newly famous by The DaVinci Code, but still a lesser known tourist attraction. On your way, a trip through the twisting allies of Le Quartier Latin will lend you a visit to subterranean jazz clubs and Greek restaurants where you can smash dishes on the floor. Truly a vibrant night life experience awaits in this arrondissement.

Good suggestions. Also check out my article on the most unique Paris restaurant bathrooms, so you don't make the mistake of stopping in the mundane ones when you could be... laughing. :)
