Those of you that haven't read my previous articles, I am manic depressive (Bi-Polar Disorder). I no longer disguise my disease or hide it from the public, my family, friends or employer for fear of the stigma attaching itself to me. I have learned that bringing it out into the open helps others understand my behavior at difficult times. It also leads to stronger relationships, which I have misunderstood for too many years.

Although those unaffected still aren't 100% educated it CAN lead to mistakes or misunderstanding quickly. Which to be honest, is how I ended up getting locked up for a simple statement I made at work one day.

I had just chosen to go back to work at my former place of employment. Things were good for about two weeks, not nearly as bad as they had been before I quit. Then an E-scam defrauded me! Some idiot had picked up on my resume on line and sent me an email for a side job or so I thought. Don't take any fake cashier's checks to the bank. I fought like heck to get anyone to care or even help me. This process took about two and a half weeks. No government agency OR my bank would help. I was out thousands of dollars and overdrawn. The STRESS factor was at it's highest ever. Magnify your own stress factor by 100, now you know where I was at.

Just getting back to work after a two month sabbatical with no income, borrowing from relatives for a short time to make my bills and BAM! Talk about a hole, no not just a hole - a CRATER to be stuck in. Living manic I don't sleep properly, stress was pushing my buttons and worry was eating me up. HOW was I going to fix all this? The straw that broke the camel's back was receiving a phone call from a Las Vegas Metro Detective informing me that "the Police have no jurisdiction over this type of crime, ma'am." I should have known, with my luck in life. The police had been my last hope, when everyone else had refused.

Crazy4bi-polar....you sound just like a psychiatrist or nurse-practitioner with your comments. Everything I reported in my story was true and exactly as it happened. Day by day it was worse than I would wish on anyone. And I wasn't kidding when I said I couldn't find one word explaining about this Legal 2000 hold that medical professionals can place on an individual. Nor to this day I have found any kind of peace from the results of being locked up. I still see the Psychiatrist every three months and in the intervening months see the Nurse-practitioner. I no longer make waves to be heard. All I want to do is live my life and work like the rest of the world -- but that hasn't even been possible. Since no one will hire me. I have been out of work for over 14 months now with no end in sight and it isn't for lack of trying either. The stigma is still there and probably always will be.

Everyone needs to remember there are two sides to every story. If any of you are educated in the field of psychiatry you will know that people who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder suffer from different mood symptoms. For example clinically significant distress, impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning. Depending on the type of Bipolar Disorder you are diagnosed with a patient may even suffer from Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder or Psychotic Disorder. All of this info can be found in the DSM-IV-TR published by the American Psychiatric Association. Ninigurl, I truly hope for your sake and for the people around you that you are currently taking your psych meds. Reading your article reminds me of most of my Bipolar clients who are off of their meds or need medication adjustment. Please continue to seek the appropriate assistance of a psychiatrist and therapist. I wish you well.

LOL Angela, you have no idea. I tried really hard to get the news here locally involved (G. Knapp) but I guess it wasn't a big enough story. Thanks for reading and responding.

My hubby and I have been here in Vegas for seven years now and you have only confirmed what a whacked out place to live it can be sometimes. I hope everything gets better for you. This is like one of those stories you hear about on 20/20!

Thanks Donna. It took alot of re-writing and editing to get it to sound halfway normal. There was a lot of rage going on when I began it. Today though I did see a HUMAN [nurse] that could empathize with the entire situation. Of course she admitted that she had recently transferred from "in-patient" care. So maybe it was just my lucky day. LOL Don't allow this to scare you away from Vegas. Read my article Living in Las Vegas: My 10 Year Retrospective. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

Holy cow! I am contemplating moving to Vegas and with my dry wit who knows how long I'd be locked up. I'm so sorry this happened to you and it's not only nurse practitioners who shouldn't be playing psychiatrists, regular MDs shouldn't either. You did well writing this out, it would seem difficult.

Tamee, I am still at a loss for words also. But writing about the experience has helped me alot. Just knowing that others are able to read what is happening everyday is cathartic. I am still taking it day by day to be honest. Life now for me is "before lock up and after release." Alot like a victim of violence. Thanks for taking the time to read and your comments.

I just don't know what to say, I cannot believe the treatment you had to endure and the problems this will continue to give you. I hope there is a happy ending in sight for you soon!

Thanks Charlene. I am still amazed also. I have tried getting a news crew involved but I guess Britney sightings are more important in this day and age. Remember she loves The Palms and Georgie Maloof so much! For those of you outside LV The Palms is one of the newer casino's off The Strip and Maloof owns it along with the Sacramento Kings in the NBA.

Fantastic article. I am amazed at how you were treated this way, and locked up against your will and then charged for it. I loved the humor you interjected also. Wonderful piece.

Thanks M.S. for the compliment. WOW doesn't begin to describe my feelings. There isn't any word I could use as a metaphor to completely describe the adventure of life now. I appreciate you taking the time to read and respond though.

Thanks Joyce. It is too bad! The least funded of all social programs too. Anonymous, I don't know if you live in Las Vegas or even Nevada but it isn't the greatest system here. If you can get your sister in to see a private Psychiatrist - it would help alot. At least she could get on meds to help out and therapy helps too. The entire family because of understanding.
