As a long time Police and Military wife I've picked up a few things to ease the woes of being married to a man in this profession. You can apply these tips to your husband even if he's not a police officer, because there are many other jobs out there that require long hours and a large amount of effort. Use your imagination in putting these tips to use.

He's going to come home cranky, late, tired to the bone. Sometimes that man will come home with bruised knuckles and not even want to look at the news. There will be times that your uniform wearing, gun toting loverboy will turn coat and become the back end of a mule as well.

Tolerance is key to not only managing, but thriving in a relationship with a man who is trained only to see black or white, not the shades of grey in between. What they see either is or isn't, there is no "Maybe".

Number 1:
Never use the old standby of "Wait until your father gets home!" If you can manage it by yourself, do so. Your spouse has to deal with childlike behavior all day or all night when he's at work, to ask him to deal with it at home as well adds a large burden on him. Instead get the children to understand your spouse needs about ten minutes to take off his uniform, and then they need to go wrap their arms around his neck and hug him to death.

Number 2:
Don't nitpick or nag him to peices about little chores around the house. With the schedule a Police Officer keeps, things like putting a nail in a fence and mowing the yard are minor. They certainly aren't worth making both you and your spouse feel bad when it's brought up.

Number 3:
If you don't know how to cook, now's the time to learn. Many times when Police Officers are out and about they don't have the luxury to take more than one meal at home, and it is a luxury because there are a lot of officers who can't even do that. Fast food and greasy spoons get old after a while, and there's nothing like a good homecooked meal to make a man feel special.
